Self-care is True Healthcare – How do we do it?

The most important relationship in our life is the relationship with ourselves. Taking care of ourselves also means that we know our own limits.  If we overstretch ourselves, we tumble. I focus on what is needed first and look at what is the most important thing to do.

Being aware of my own movements and breathing, so long as I keep in touch with myself in this way, the work flows more easily. Sometimes at work, I take a break by sitting on the toilet for a few minutes to connect with my body again. I have observed that the quality of my work is different when I am focused on my movements and what is in front of me.

A smile, a twinkle in the eye, the way we speak, a gentle touch, all support me and the client equally. Clients are more themselves, more relaxed and trust you.

Even when we have limited time with elderly clients, we can still truly connect to them. What is important is to be yourself – no pretending.  People feel the fakeness.

Taking responsibility for our own health makes a difference.

The difference being I am responsible for the choices I make. When I choose to focus on what is there, on who I am and what I do well, I feel energised.

I have found that taking responsibility for the following has supported me to:

Be aware of self-sabotaging thoughts and rules about how I should be

Wake up with a lively feel to embrace the day

Appreciate myself for who I am

Listen to my body

Say “no” without feeling guilty

Be patient and loving with myself and others

Know that how I feel about myself is not dependent on the care I give to others

Love my body: moving, going for walks, swimming

Attend to everything with awareness and love

How I now live my life

I now work with full attention and settlement and enjoy my work more.  I communicate and have closer connections with patients, their families and my colleagues.  I am more aware because I am more in touch with my body. I take responsibility for each choice I make.  I walk, stretch, exercise, eat healthy meals.  I make more time for myself in the mornings so I’m not rushing to work.  I’ve changed the way I drive, now my drive to work is more relaxed and joyful, whereas before I was always in a rush (but I do love fast driving). If sometimes things don’t go as I expect them to, I do not punish or judge myself. There is no good or bad. Instead, I start afresh and appreciate all that I bring. This makes me stronger and more aware.

Not only is self-care possible, it is essential when we are caring for others.
